Dean graduated from Walhalla High School in North Dakota in 1969. After graduation he attended the North Dakota State School of Science to study Mechanical Engineering. In November of 1971 he came to Colorado on vacation, needless to say, he loved Colorado. Dean started working for Bell Surveying that same year in the reproduction room and delivering surveys. Within three months he started drafting survey maps in the Denver office. In 1973 he was assigned to the field office in the Colorado Mountains where Bell was surveying the Henderson Mine Project, Meadow Creek Dam near Fraser, and the Mount Emmons Mine in Crested Butte. This is where he began his career in Surveying as a Rear Chainman on a Survey Crew. Over the next several years he continued his education in surveying techniques and the laws of the industry under the watchful eye of Richard “Dick” Gossett. In 1979 with those years of experience under his belt he passed the State Land Surveyors test and received his License. In 1980 he was reassigned to the Denver office, and by 1986 became a partner in the company. That was about the time the Surveying Industry was starting to change the way we did things. Dean was instrumental in bringing Bell Surveying into the age of computers.
